Vol XXXIX. Letters from Mr Burnet at Berlin, to Mr (subsequently Sir Andrew) Mitchell, 1764-1766.
1. Treatment of Mr Burnet by the Foreign Ministers. Plan of the Bank. Arrival of the Great Chancellor of Russia. Information that instructions are to be given from Russia to press the Departure of Sir G. Macartney for that Court. Countess Stroganow. Remittance of the greatest part of the produce of the British Magazines, seized by the Regency of Minden. Pecuniary affairs. Berlin 13th November, 1764. Folio 1.
2. Inclosing answers from the King and Queen of Prussia to Mr Mitchell’s Letters of recall; as also a Letter from the King of Prussia to Mr Mitchell, with his Prussian Majesty’s present. Also an answer from Messrs Finkenstein and Hertberg to Lord Sandwich, on his Burnet’s being accredited as secretary for carrying on the King’s affairs at the Court of Prussia. Berlin, 26th June, 1765. Folio 5.
3. Pecuniary matters. The Establishment of the Bank will soon take place. Anger of ‘Caster’ [the King of Prussia] at Mr Mitchell’s recall. Berlin, 26th June, 1765. Folio 7.
4. Friendship of Caster and Pollux, [The King of Prussia, and his brother Prince Henry]. Public amusements at Berlin. Arrival of the Princess Amelia. Berlin, 5th October, 1765. Folio 9.
5. Pollux [Prince Henry] sets out for his country seat. The King of Prussia comes to Berlin and gives a private audience to General Nugent. Present to the Dutch Ambassador. Ceremony of the Baptism of General Liethen’s son. Sentiments of the King of Prussia, on sending a Minister to London, and receiving Mr Mitchell again. Berlin, 19th October, 1765. Folio 11.
6. The King of Prussia is at ‘Sans Suci’ new commercial schemes. Zeglin is named to succeed Rexin at Constantinople. Coldness between the Courts of Berlin and Petersburgh. Additional duties laid on French wines. Orders for assignations of wood and ordinance against all games of hazard. Anecdotes of Lord Marischall. Berlin, 5th November, 1765. Folio 13.
7. Death of the Margravine of Schwedt, and inconsolable grief of the King of Prussia. General news. Berlin, 30th November, 1765. Folio 15.
8. The King of Prussia intends to name Count Maltzam as his Minister to England. Mistake relative to the day of nomination. Uncertainty whether Mr Mitchell’s health will permit him to accept the nomination of Minister. Berlin, 4th December, 1765. Folio 17.
9. Doubts on Mr Mitchell’s appointment, pension etc. ‘Don Louis’ [Monsr Michell?] is named governor of Neufchatel. His good fortune, and sentiments. Departure of Zeglin for Constantinople. Return of Mons Goltz from Warsaw. Report of an intended change of Ministers between the courts of Berlin and Versailles. Recommendation of Mr Mitchell to the D[uke] of York by Prince Henry. Berlin, 14th December, 1765. Folio 19.
10. Steps taken to procure Mr Mitchell a House etc. Nomination of Count Malzahn to be Minister at the Court of London. Imbecile character of the Court, who has been chosen on purpose by the King of Prussia, in consequence of dislike to Lord Bute. Private letters written by the King of Prussia, to give Mr Mitchell a hint to decline accepting the situation of Minister under the existing circumstances. Berlin, 17th December, [1765]. Folio 21.
11. Disappointment of ‘Louis’ in not being appointed the King of Prussia’s Minister at London. Negotations for a house for Mr Mitchell. Arrival of the Royal Family at Berlin to spend the Carnival. Berlin, 21st December, 1765. Folio 23.
12. Congratulations on Mr Mitchell’s (now Sir Andrew) being invested with the order of the Bath, and on his nomination to be Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Berlin. Universal satisfaction at the prospect of Mr Mitchell’s return. Arrangements relative to a House. Public amusements. Berlin, 31st December, 1765. Folio 25.
13. The King of Prussia wishes a day should be named by the King for the departure of the respective Ministers. Arrangements relative to a Cook etc. Berlin, 4th January, 1766. Folio 27.
