Bespoke volume bound for Richard D'Oyly Carte comprising published libretti by W. S. Gilbert for five operas: The Sorcerer; H.M.S. Pinafore; The Pirates of Penzance; Patience; Iolanthe.
There is no bookplate, and no ownership signature, but the volume appears to be a bespoke companion volume to the collection of vocal scores of similar date belonging to Richard D'Oyly Carte (MS Mus. 1844/1/32).
The title-page to each operas has been subsequently annotated in pencil (by Reginald Allen?) identifying the printed libretti as either first or subsequent issue. The front flyleaf has been annotated in blue ink (also by Allen?): 'These five libretti were bound up for Richard D.C. probably about 1883: a set of pianoforte scores was also bound up in the same manner at that time.' Unmarked by Richard D'Oyly Carte.
