The Window[,] or, The Songs of the Wrens. Words written for music by Alfred Tennyson. The music by Arthur Sullivan. Published by Strahan & Co., Publishers, 56 Ludgate Hill, London.
Tennyson's introductory note (1870) records: 'Four years ago Mr. Sullivan requested me to write a little song-cycle, German fashion, for him to exercise his art upon.' The volume comprises eleven settings (and one additional song, no. IXB, that has not been set).
The volume is unmarked, save for two corrections in pencil to Tennyson's words (pp. 6 and 25), and an inscription on the inside front cover ('To my Dear Wife [...] Christmas 1870').
For a second copy of this volume (which differs in the colour of the boards, and in the presence of an errata slip referring to the pencil corrections to Tennyson's words noted above), see MS Mus. 1844/1/38.
