Orme is shocked at Billy's being put to construe before he knows his declensions. "I dare say you concur with me Sir, that being well sounded (? grounded) in the Accidence and Syntax is the only sure and, in the long run, the shortest method of learning, and to this I beg you will keep him confined until first he can decline at call and then repeat by heart all the simple rules of the Syntax. I wish him likewise to apply to writeing and Arithmetic. Some time ago he wrote a good hand and could say his multiplication table, had got some way in French and danced tolerable. These too I wish likewise to be kept up, but his Latin Grammar must for a while be the principal object." Orme suggests that, though the boy is idle and fond of play, "gentle methods will do best with him."
