The collection contains several old manuscripts. Most of the manuscripts are written in classical Arabic. They are written in prose and poetry. Some are copies of the original works by important Muslim scholars dealing with religious subjects. Others have glosses in Arabic, Soninke, and Mandinka Ajami. The documents include Mandinka incantations and texts with special figures and numerological formulas to address various social and health problems, including infertility. The Ajami texts are generally vocalized.
Custodial history: The owner inherited most of the manuscripts from his father who inherited them from his grandfather, Arfand Sada Kouyate. Arfang Sada Kouyate was born in Diattircounda where he received his advanced Islamic education and served as a marabout (religious leader, healer, and diviner) until his death in Norabantang.
Extent and format of original material: 103 pages.
Physical characteristics: Unbound manuscript. Most of the manuscripts are destroyed by water. Many pages are torn, chipped and have ink stains, which makes them hard to read because of their age and environmental damage.
Owner(s) of original material: Malang Kouyate.
Author(s) of original material: Arfang Sada Kouyate.
Additional script information: Mandinka Ajami, Soninke Ajami.
