Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, ʿAbd al-Jalīl ابن عبد الرحمن، عبد الجليل
- Scope & Content:
-
A tract in Persian on the lawfulness of sacred music and on terms used by Sufis. It was entitled Masīḥī in honour of the physician and poet Hakīm Sadrā ibn Hakīm Fakhr al-Dīn Shīrazī (حكيم سدرا بن حكيم فخر الدين شيرازي, d. 1061/1650-51), who came to India in c. 1603 and was awarded the title Masīḥ al-Zamān (مسيح الزمان) in the fourth year of the reign of Jahāngīr (جهانگیر, reg. 1605-27).
The present copy contains only the first three chapters (of four) of Book One on the lawfulness of music. Book Two, not included in this copy, discusses the terms used by Sufis and verses sung by them.
The copy was completed in Shāhjahānābād on 17 Ṣafar 1073/30 September 1662 by the scribe Muḥammad Amīn of Akbarābād (محمد أمين ساكن أكبرآباد; f. 17v, lines 24-25), and collated during the Persian solar month of Mehr, of the fifth year of Aurangzeb's reign (September-October 1662, see below, f. 17v, line 25).
Begins (f. 15r, lines 22-23):
