Satin purse

Pink silk rectangular pocketbook/purse, for keeping letters. Front, back and interior surfaces quilted in fine chain stitch to form a small diamond pattern. One main inside pocket and two smaller ones with flaps. Lined in blue silk.
Said formerly to have contained birth and baptism certificate of Harriet Stewart (described by Castalia Leveson-Gower in her notes as found in “satin pochette”). On arrival at the British Library the purse contained letters and other papers of Henrietta (Harriet) Elizabeth Leveson-Gower, Countess Granville, from her mother, Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire, and her half sister; letters from Lady Bessborough’s maid Sarah Peterson to Lord Granville 1821; letters from George Canning; and three locks of hair.
