Two fragments from mummy cartonnage.
Upper fragment (A)
Recto (P.Lond. II 227a recto, TM 5890): Fragment of a receipt mentioning the month of Pauni of the 4th year, presumably of Ptolemy VI Philometor (July 177 BC). With subscription at the end.
Verso (P.Lond. II 227a verso, TM 78460): Document, perhaps a petition, mentioning a certain Thermuthis.
Lower Fragment (B) (P.Lond. II 227b, TM 5891): An official letter, presumably written by the topogrammateus (district secretary) in the Pathyrite nome. Dated in the reign of Ptolemy VI Philometor.

Two papyrus fragments that do not belong together, from mummy cartonagge, mounted on cardboard in the same glass case.
Upper fragment (A): With surface damage throughout, bearing writing on both sides along the fibres. The front is broken off at the sides, and preserves the upper and lower margins. The back contains three complete lines and in the bottom left margin one line running across the fibres, perpendicular to the other lines.
Lower fragment (B): with surface damage and writing on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. Portions of 7 lines survive.

Script: A: Recto: Cursive hand, somewhat irregular in size and slightly uneven; rough cursive hand for the subscription in the last two lines; B: Neat and regular semi-cursive hand, with widely spaced lines.

Origin: A: Egypt. B: Pathyrite nome, Egypt (?).
Provenance: Panopolite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 216-228 from the Reverend Greville John Chester (b. 1830, d. 1892) on 14 May 1892. Papyri 219-228 were taken from the cartonnage of a mummy case.
