(1) Letters received by Peter Hodgkiss:

• 2 Feb 1988. Autograph letter from David Chaloner: 'I have a manuscript, book of poems for publication, and want to know if you are interested in looking at the work for Galloping Dog Press.'
• 18 Feb 1988. Typed letter from Chaloner: 'Thankyou for your postcard offering to read the manuscript, which is enclosed. I am not now too sure about the title RURAL PURSUITS and would ask to reserve the right to change it.' For the enclosed typescript, see (2) below. Chaloner's letter has been annotated by Hodgkiss: 'accepted - letter 24/3/88'.
• 12 May 1988. Autograph letter from Chaloner. Title of book is now 'TRANS'. Letter refers to enclosing 'two revisions' (complete poems) but only one is present with the letter: 'As It Is'.
• 17 May 1988. Autograph letter from Chaloner. Refers to cover design, perhaps a photo of a work by sculptor John Davies, whom Chaloner is in touch with. (Chaloner eventually settled upon a drawing by Davies, 'Faces in the Dark'.)
• 26 Jul 1988 (date stamp): British Library Cataloguing Data Sheet.
• 1 Sep 1988. Autograph letter from Chaloner, referring to 'quotes for publicity'.
• 4 Oct 1988. Autograph letter from Chaloner, enclosing a review (in photocopy typescript) by Geoffrey Ward of the anthology A Various Art (1987), eds. Crozier and Longville. Ward's review was published in American Book Review (May/June 1989). Chaloner has underlined a comment on his work that is suitable for publicity.
• 12 Nov 1988. Typed letter from Chaloner: 'I enclose the final version of the collection'. Chaloner is meeting Davies 'next week to resolve the cover'.
• 28 Nov 1988. Autograph letter (2 sheets) from Chaloner, togetther with autograph corrections (1 sheet, 26 Nov).
• 27 Jun 1989. Autograph letter from Chaloner: ''The corrected proof of TRANS'.
• 7 Sep 1989. Autograph letter from Chaloner, supplying a black and white photograph for the cover (photograph not present).

(2). Original typescript, submitted to Hodgkiss 18 Feb 1988. The title 'Rural Pursuits' is struckthrough in pencil, 'TRANS' added by Hodgkiss in black ink above. Hodgkiss annotation to p. 54 ('rev. version' - 'As It Is') and to 'Variations on Silence and Figures in a Room' on the penultimate unnumberd page ('TO BE INSERTED WHERE? / letter to David 19/5/88').
