- Title:
- Peter Hodgkiss Publishing Archive: John Freeman, Landscape Out of Focus
- Scope & Content:
-
(1). Letters from John Freeman to Peter Hodgkiss:
- 27 Apr 1976. Autograph letter. Refers to Freeman's review for Poetry Information 16 of James Wright, The Branch Will Not Break. Enquires if Hodgkiss would 'like to bring out a pamphlet of mine [...] as you seem to like Snow Corridors' (Rivelin Press, 1975).
- 22 Jun [1977]. Autograph letter: 'the selection I sent you is a bit out of date'. Suggests Tim Stewart might design the cover.
- 30 Jun [1977]. Typed letter, University College Cardiff letterhead.
- 14 Jul 1977. Typed letter. Considers title options.
- 19 Jul 1977. Typed letter. Includes, on the verso, list of contents for Landscape Out of Focus, annotated by Hodgkiss.
- 12 Aug [1977]. Typed letter, together with photocopy of autograph prose piece 'Moving Out Notebook' (1975). Letter also encloses (not present) Freeman's review for Poetry Information of Gael Turnbull, Residues.
- 17 Sep 1977. Typed letter (2 sheets) detailing corrections to proofs.
- 27 Sep 1977. Typed letter. Cover design coming soon.
- [?Nov 1977]. Undated autograph letter. Refers to the printing of the book.
(2). Draft list of contents, in Hodgkiss's hand. Annotated: 'John - Please return this to me. P. Copy sent 18/11/77.' Together with two phoptocopy typed texts: Pilgramage' (not included in book) and 'What the Matter Can Be' (included).
(3). Various typed poems (many are photocopies) submitted for consideration. Freeman's letters indicate some uncertainty about which poems to publish in the book, supplying many more than were included and welcoming Hodgkiss's opinion. Poems included have been marked by Hodgkiss with a 'tick' in red ink. These 'ticked' poems are interspersed: there is no gathered final text in the file for the book.
(4). Publication. John Freeman, Landscape Out of Focus. Galloping Dog Press: Swansea, 1978. An incomplete copy, lacking pp. 3/4 and 37/38.
(5). 5 Sep [1980?]. Autograph letter from Freeman (writing as 'Blackweir Press') to Nigel [Jenkins], enclosing typed (carbon) manuscript of David Tipton, Nomads and Settlers (Blackweir Press, 1980): 'There are 2 books due out soon, probably by end of September, for which I enclose the manuscripts - in case Peter's copy date is soon.' The Tipton manuscript (49 sheets, edited in red ink) is the only text that is present in the file. Freeman's letter ends by suggesting that [Jenkins] is 'welcome to pass on this scrawl' to Hodgkiss.
