Castalia Leveson-Gower’s research notes, correspondence on translation and other research questions, and drafts of editorial text in preparation for publication of her book, Lord Granville Leveson Gower: Private Correspondence (1916). Chiefly manuscript.
Contents:
- Notes extracted from letters of Lady Stafford, Lady Sutherland and Lord Gower, relating to visit to Paris, June – August 1790. With a note for Mr Murray.
- ‘Epitaph for herself by Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire’. Transcript in the hand of Castalia Leveson-Gower. Note at the end of epitaph: ‘Lines written by Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire on the back of a note from the Duke of Devonshire apparently in 1774’.
- Signed note by Castalia Leveson-Gower on headed paper stating ‘Enclosed contains Birth certificate & Baptism of Harriet Emma Arundel Stewart 1800 & 1801 just as I found it in the satin pochette’. Refers also to an oval snuff box with a miniature of two children’s heads referred to by Lady Bessborough in her letters. None of these items were present when the collection was acquired by the British Library.

- Lists of nicknames used by Lady Bessborough, Lord Granville and their circle.
- Lists of incomplete letters, headed ‘Want beginning’ and ‘Unfinished’.
- Research notes on scraps of paper, including lists of Russian names, notes on French aristocratic emigrés during the Revolution.
- Draft introduction (incomplete) and chapter introductions.
- Picture research: lists of possible illustrations for the book, including ‘Suggestions for Illustrations’.
