- Peter Hodgkiss Publishing Archive: Tom Leonard, nora's place
- Scope & Content:
-
(1) Letters received by Peter Hodgkiss:
- 22 Jun 1988. Autograph letter from Tom Leonard: 'Thought you'd want a copy of this now that it's finished, least I think it is, as Nora has told me that's all I'm getting.'
- 17 Aug 1988. Typed letter from the Scottish Arts Council supplying application form for Book Production Grant (form not completed).
- 28 Nov 1990. Autograph letter from Leonard referring to the back cover photograph. He does not want the location (Budapest) to be mentioned: 'It's just anywhere, somewhere, that's what it should be.'
(2). Word-processed manuscript (17 sheets). Annotated (by Hodgkiss) at head of title-page: 'SABON' (typeface) and 'Protext'. The manuscript lacks the penultimate and title-poem 'nora's place'.
(3). Cover proofs (2 x A3 sheets folded), and a note by Hodgkiss written on a cover card sample.
(4). Proofs corrected by Leonard (excluding the title-poem 'nora's place').
(5). Title-poem: 'nora's place'. Leonard's word-processed texts with a detailed autograph note on typeface size and disposition. Together with typeset versions (annotated) and an information sheet annotated by Hodgkiss presenting the Sabon typeface in different sizes.
(6). Various proof pages, annotated by Leonard.
(7). True North (typesetters) folding information sheet displaying available typefaces; 'Books in Print & Checklist' booklet produced by Five Seasons Press, Hereford, printed on the same paper (different colour) used for nora's place; and a note from the printer (Riverrun, Newcastle) giving specifications for the book (annotated by Hodgkiss: '2nd proofs sent 26/9/90').
(8). Notes in Hodgkiss's hand regarding the contents of a potential future publication combining nora's place with a selection of Leonard's essays, many originally published in the Edinburgh Review. Four photocopied essays from that journal are present in the file: 'On Reclaiming the Local'; 'Journeys'; 'What Happens in Reznikoff's Poetry'; and 'Mater Tenebrarum: A Study of James Thomson'. (Galloping Dog Press would soon cease operations; thereafter, Jonathan Cape published Leonard's Reports from the Present in 1995, and Etruscan Books published Definite Articles in 2013.)
(9). Publication. Tom Leonard, nora's place. Galloping Dog Press: Newcastle upon Tyne, 1990. Proof copy, not saddle-stitched, with annotations by printer at front and back.
