(1). Letters received by Peter Hodgkiss from Eric Mottram, with a final letter from Peter Donnelly. Mottrams' s letters refer not only to Elegies but also in passing to other poets, readings and publications.
- 23 Jul 1980. Typed letter, Mottram to Hodgkiss. 'Don't be too shocked at the heavy thump through your postbox and mind at this rather dreadfully massive manuscript.' Mottram describes the book as 'a celebration of passions', and considered 'calling the book CELEBRATIONS: THIRTYEIGHT ELEGIES - and you may indeed like that'.
- 9 Aug 1980. Typed letter, Mottram to Hodgkiss. 'Here is the resources list'.
- 14 Aug 1980. Typed letter, Mottram to Hodgkiss. 'The poems are arranged to make a book rather than a chronological order of composition. The arrangemnent is partly in groups - roughly writers, musicians, painters, comics, philosophers, and so on.' Peter Donnelly is to prepare the cover.
- 15 Nov 1980. Typed letter, Mottram to Hodges, enclosing Donnelly's art work (not present). Mottram comments on Tom Leonard: 'he's got [more of] my life in one poem than most poets have in tomes and tomes.'
- 18 Dec 1980. Typed letter, Mottram to Hodgkiss, providing a list of corrections.
- 31 Feb 1981. Typed letter (2 sheets), Mottram to Hodgkiss: 'I can never get over the fact that anyone should take trouble to print my stuff.' Further remarks on the spacing and lineation of the poems. Mottram will provide an additional holograph elegy for the book.
- 10 Mar 1981. Typed letter, Mottram to Hodgkiss: 'Many thanks for the proofs'. A list of further corrections.
- 20 Mar 1981. Autograph letter, Mottram to Hodgkiss, commenting on the additional holograph elegy: 'I dread writing out my poem 30 times - reminds me of school'. Mottram is departing to lecture at the University of Budapest (13-18 Apr) and wonders if Elegies will be ready to take with him.
- 26 Mar 1981. Autograph letter, Peter Donnelly to Hodgkiss, thanking him for the return of his cover art work.
