Sharḥ lil-adwār شرح للأدوار

Scope & Content:

Anonymous commentary on the preceding work in this volume, the Kitāb al-adwār fī ʿilm al-mūsīqī (كتاب الأدوار في علم الموسيقي), by Ṣafī al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn Yūsuf al-Urmawī (صفي الدين عبد المؤمن بن يوسف الأرموي, d. 1294). Brief lemmata from the text are preceded by qāla (قال, 'He said:') and followed by the author's commentary introduced by aqūlu (أقول, 'I say:'). The text is illustrated with tables and diagrams (some unfinished) accompanying the original text of the Kitāb al-adwār. The only other known copy of this text is British Library Add MS 7471, ff. 41v-92r.

After an introduction dealing with sciences in general, the commentator gives the passages of Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Tarkhān al-Fārābī (أبو نصر محمد بن محمد بن ترخان الفارابي; ca 870-950) on sound quoted by al-Urmawī in the latter's second musical treatise, al-Risālah al-Sharafīyah (الرسالة الشرفية), al-Urmawī's criticisms of these, and his own responses to these criticisms.

Copied in Shahjahānābād (Delhi) by the scribe Sayyid Abū Muḥammad ibn Sayyid Fatḥ Muḥammad Samānī (سيد أبو محمد بن سيد فتح محمد سماني) on 13 Jumādá I 1073/24 December 1662 and collated in Kashmir on 19 Muḥarram 1074/23 August 1663 (see colophon, f.68r, transcribed below).
