Scope & Content:

Treatise on the construction and use of over twenty astronomical instruments by ‘Abd al-‘Alī ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn al-Bīrjandī (عبد العلي بن محمد بن حسين البيرجندي, d. 923/1525 or 26). At the end of the text, al-Bīrjandī explains that he took the descriptions of the construction and use of all but two of the instruments in his book from the Compendium of Principles and Advanced [Techniques] Concerning the Science of Time-keeping (Jāmiʿ al-mabādiʾ wa-al-ghāyāt fī ʿilm al-mīqāt, see Or 5831, ff. 1r-283r) by Sharaf al-Din Abū ‘Alī al-Ḥasan ibn ‘Alī ibn ‘Umar al-Marrākushī (شرف الدين أبو علي الحسن بن علي بن عمر المراكشي, fl. second half of the 13th century; see f. 59v, lines 12-13, transcribed below). Information on the remaining two instruments (the ذات الثقبتين and the ذات المثلث) is taken from unspecified writings by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Khāzinī (عبد الرحمن الخازني, d. after 1131; see f. 59v, line 14, transcribed below). Al-Bīrjandī completed the treatise in mid-Rabīʿ I 895/February 1490 (see author's colophon, f. 59v, lines 15-16, transcribed below).

The copy was completed 2 Dhū al-Qaʿdah 1066/12 August 1656 by ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Nahī (? عبد الكريم النهي, see scribe's colophon, f. 59v, lines 18-21 and owner/draughtsman's colophon, f. 59v, line 22, both transcribed below). The first owner and draughtsman Qubād ibn ‘Abd al-Jalīl al-Ḥārithī al-Badakhshī (قباد بن عبد الجليل الحارثي البدخشي, d. 1083/1672-3) added the diagrams and tables at Hyderabad Deccan in Shawwāl 1066/July-August 1656 (see his note on f. 1r). Qubād ibn ‘Abd al-Jalīl is known from other sources by the honorific title Diyānat Khān (ديانت خان), but in this manuscript he refers to himself as 'Slave of the Doorway' (بنده درگاه, see his note on f. 1r) and 'Servant of the Two Gardens' (خادم رياضين, see owner/draughtsman's colophon, f. 59v, line 22).

Qubād ibn ‘Abd al-Jalīl completed collating the text and tables with its exemplar and another manuscript on 15 Dhū al-Qaʿdah 1066/25 August 1656 at Hyderabad Deccan (see collation note to right of colophon, f. 59v).

The text is arranged in nineteen chapters (أبواب):
