Description: A bilingual translation and commentary on the canonical text of Vinaya Mahāvagga. Jambudhaja's bilingual translation and commentary was the most common nissaya of canonical Vinaya and Samantapāsādikā transmitted in Burma from the mid-seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries. However, the text of that work has not being critically established until now due to the presence of multiple versions of Vinaya nissaya compiled by different authors, all circulated with the same title. The nissaya on Vinaya Mahāvagga pāli is identified as a brief expositon in the colophon and this identification is relevant as a more detailed bilingual translation of Mahāvagga pāli was circulated at least since the early nineteenth century. It is, however, unclear if such definition was made by Jambudhaja himself or the note in the colophon was a later addition reflecting the emergence of a more detailed, supplemented revision of Jambudhaja's "short" nissaya.
