The volume contains burial records of freed (forro) and free individuals registered in the Church of São João Batista (Baptista) de Icaraí (Carahy, Carii, Carahi) between 01 Jan 1866 and 14 Jul 1872. Francisco Xavier Baptista signed the opening and closing charters in Niterói on 02 Jan 1866 and initialed all folios. Vicar Antonio de Mello Munis Maia and Coadjutor/ Vicar Antonio Gomes Xavier signed all entries. Among others, the volume records the burials of children (inocentes), including freed children (forras), abandoned children (expostas), and white children; Major Antonio José Pinella; Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Martins; Antonio Leocádio, Division Chief; Manoel Nogueira Lacerda, First Lieutenant of the Imperial Navy Doctor João Joaquim Gouvêa; Doctor Eduardo Thompson, whose death was a suicide ("suffering from alienation, he was led to commit an act of desperation" ="soffrendo de alienação o obrigou a praticar aquelle acto de desespero", on fl19); Captain Francisco Antonio Pinto; Reverend Francisco de Moraes Loureiro; Baron of Carapebús; Doctor Luis Alvares de Andrade; Doctor Francisco Manoel Soares de Souza; Lieutenant Colonel José Maria da Costa Araujo; Colonel Lozimo Ferreira da Silva; Reverend José Antonio Teixeira Pimirim; Lieutenant Colonel José Ferreira da Silva; Doctor João José Pimentel; Ensign João Antonio Falleiros; Captain Benjamim Rodrigo Baptista; Doctor Antonio Francisco Leal; Capitão de Mar e Guerra José Maria Galhardo; Vicar Antonio de Mello Munis Maia; indivduals hailing from the provinces of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Sergipe, Piauí, Pernambuco, Paraíba, and Bahia; natives of Portugal,Spain, Italy, France, Germany, England, Russia, Paraguay, and Gibraltar; and freed Africans ascribed the following ethnonyms/"nations": Angola, Benguela (Benguella), Cabinda, Cassange, Congo, Mina, Moçambique (Mozambique), and Monjolo (Monjollo). Each entry recorded the burial ocation. The burial of Paraguayan Manoel Seuni, a prisoner of war, is recorded on folios 116v and 117f; his burial was dated 28 Jan 1870 and may be related to the Paraguayan War (Dec 1864-Mar 1870). The burial of Benvinda, a freedwoman of mixed racial origins (parda liberta), is recorded on folio 153f; her mother was a slave of Vicar Antonio de Mello Munis Maia.
