The volume records burials of freed (forro) and free individuals registered in the Church of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, Saquarema-RJ and dating from 13 Apr 1829 through 10 Mar 1836. The opening charter was signed in Rio de Janeiro on 30 Dec 1829 by J. Caetano Ferreira de Aguiar, while the closing charter was signed in Rio de Janeiro on 10 Jan 1827 by Joaquim de Souza Maia, who also numbered and initialed the folios. Entries were signed by the following clergy: Vicar José Pinto Pinheiro, Coadjutor José de Santa Anna Costa e Oliveira, and Commissioned Vicar Antonio Joaquim de Freitas. In addition to the burial records, numerous testaments of free people recorded in the volume document the transfer of slaves to their descendants and, in some cases, the manumission of the enslaved indivdual after the owner's death. African "nations" and ethnonyms mentioned: Rebola, Cabinda, and Angola. A number of entries record the burial of children (inocentes) and several record the burials of Portuguese natives. Among others, the burials of the following indivdiuals are recorded: Major Adeadato José Victorino, Father Antonio Ribeiro, Vicar José Pinto Pinheiro (one of the signatories of the volume) and Captain Manoel de Jesus Maria. A few burials of enslaved individuals were recorded in the volume; there is no notation that they were also recorded elsewhere, such as the burials of Thereza, slave of Captain Jeronimo Francisco de Oliveira, and of Vicente, slave of Manoel Francisco da Costa. Burial entries concerning freed children (inocentes) note the status of the child's parents; in the case that one parent was still enslaved, the owner was identified.
Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 83 loose numbered folios in good condition overall. The volume is incomplete and does not have a cover. Folios 2 through 7, 36, 38, and 45 are missing. Dimensions: 20cm x 31cm.
