Scope & Content:

The volume records marriages of freed (forro) and free individuals registered in the Church of São Gonçalo do Amarante between 20 May 1865 and 28 Sept 1923. Both the opening and closing charters were signed by Vicar Eduardo de Andrade Lima in 1865. The entries on folio 217f were not signed by a priest. The volume documents the marriages of Portuguese and Paraguayan individuals, among others. Captains, lieutenants, majors, colonels, and other individuals in the military appear as witnesses in a number of records. The volume documents a pastoral visit realized on 19 Sept 1995 by the Archbishop of Niterói, D. Carlos Alberto Navarro; his signature appears next to that of the Chancellor of the Archbishop, Father Edson Assunção. Entries were signed by the following clergy: Vicar Eduardo de Andr.e Lima, Vicar João Ferreira (Ferr.a) Goulart, Coadjutor Leonardo José Gomes Adão, Vicar Father Paulo d'Estibayre, and Vicar Father José Silveira da Rocha.

Physical characteristics: The volume is comprised of 238 numbered, insect- and ink-damaged folios and a cover. Some of the folios are torn. Dimensions: 46cm X 31cm.
