- Scope & Content:

This volume contains burial records of freed (forro) and free individuals registered in the Church of São Gonçalo do Amarante between 27 Jul 1772 and 28 Feb 1806. There is no opening charter; the closing charter is dated 28 Jun 1759 and was signed by Father Ignacio da Costa Antunes, who rubriced the volume's 235 folios and designated them for testaments from the parish. However, only folios 233 through 235 were used for testaments: those of Captain Baltazar José Rangel de Abreu, on 07 Oct 1795, and of Manoel Pereira Carvalho, dated 06 May 1796. Pastoral visits taking place on 15 Jan 1774 ; 31 Dec 1778; 31 Aug 1781 ; 20 Mar 1784 ; 05 Mar 1787; 14 May 1791, and 11 Nov 1795 are registered in the volume. Entries were signed by the following clergy: Vicar Bento Joseph Caetano Barrozo Pereira, Coadjutor Domingos Dias, Vicar Bento José Ferreira da Matta, Vicar Antonio Vicente Roiz Pereira, and Coadjutor Felix José Tinoco de Almeida. The burials of children (inocentes), some of whom were abandaned, are recorded; among the burials of freed people are several individuals whose partners remained enslaved. The entries make frequent reference to testaments, but they were not preserved in this volume. The burial location (brotherhood, factory) is recorded and sometimes, the number of masses requested by the deceased was also noted. Among the many burials are records of the following individuals: Cavalry Captain (Capitão de Cavalos) Miguel de Frias Vasconcellos, Ordinance Captain (Capitão de Ordenança) Antonio Cardozo Barboza, Captain Manoel Rapozo de Vasconcellos, Ensign José de Affonseca Rangel, Doctor Bartholomeu Correa de Medeiros, and Captain Miguel de Oliveira Barboza, a free black man (preto forro) who was married to a freed black woman (preta forra) named Dona Izabel Maria de Gusmão (folio 105v). The volume is incomplete and the chronology of the entries jumps from 26 Jul 1792 (fl 114v) to 27 Jun 1795 (fl 139f).
Physical characteristics: The volume was originally comprised of 235 folios, of which 152 numbered, non-sequential folios have survived. The following folios are missing: fl 1- fl 44; fl 51 and fl 52; fl 115 - fl 138; and fl 220 - fl 232.
