The volume records burials and baptisms of freed (forro) and free individuals registered in the Church of São Gonçalo do Amarante, São Gonçalo-RJ. The burial records date from 06 Jul 1876 through 09 Jul 1884, while the baptismal records date from 04 Dec 1885 through 12 Jan 1896. Canon Vicar João Ferreira Goulart signed all entries. Only an opening charter has survived; it was signed in Niterói on 02 Jan 1887 by Provincial Judge Luis Pinto de Miranda, who also initialed the folios. The opening charter notes that the volume has been designated for recording the burials of free individuals resident in the parish. African "nations"/ethnonyms mentioned: Congo. The burial records note the cause of death and, in some cases, the name of the doctor who performed the medical examination of the deceased. The volume records the burial of children (inocentes), individuals abandoned in the Santa Casa de Misericórdia, some with an identification number, and Portuguese individuals, among others. Entre os médicos que acompanharam pacientes enfermos, cujos óbitos foram registrados neste livro, foram nomeados The following doctors who cared for the deceased are mentioned by name: Dr. Manoel Antonio da Costa, Dr. Manoel Hermigildo da França, Dr. Antonio Pinheiro Guedes, Dr. Francisco Luis Tavares, Dr. Augusto Duque Estrada, Dr. Guilherm Taylor March, Dr. Agostinho José de Souza, Dr. Miguel Zacarias de Alvarenga, Dr. José Francisco de Paula e Silva, Dr. Carlos Maximiano Azevedo e Silva, Dr. José Francisco de Oliveira, Dr. João Melitão da Fonseca, Dr. Manoel Vieira da Fonseca, Dr. Paulo Cesar de Andrade, Dr João Pedro de Amorim e Carrão, and Dr. Edimundo Xavier. Interestingly, the burial records also document the name of the police inspectors (inspetores de quarteirão) responsible for accompanying the burial. The 18 inspectors whose names appear in the volume are as follows: Antonio José Ferreira, e Ananias José Ferreira (01º quarteirão); Luis Antonio Coutinho (2º e 3º quarteirão); Antonio Ferreira de Mello (3 quarteirão), José Francisco Ornellas (4º, 8º e 12º quarteirão); Bernardo de Souza Pimentel, José Paulo e Souza, Estevão Valle, e Antonio Pinto Alves (5º quarteirão); José Antonio Ferreira Ornellas, e Saturnino José da Silva Freitas (7º quarteirão); José da Rosa André (7º e 8º quarteirão); Manoel Joaquim da Silva Encarnação (9º quarteirão); Marianno Antonio de Amorim Carrão (11º quarteirão); Guilherme dos Santos de Andrade and José Luis de Menezes (12º quarteirão); Quintino Luis de Faria (13º quarteirão); Dionizio José de Penedo, e Antonio José da Silva Nicoth (14º quarteirão); João Lopes Raposo Junior and Manoel Antonio da Costa Vigo (15º quarteirão); José Machado d'Avila (16º quarteirão); José Francisco Oliveira Rosa (17º and 18º quarteirão); Joaquim José da Silva Encarnação (11º and 18º quarteirão); Ildefonço José de Sá Ferreira , and Manoel Ferreira Peixoto (18º quarteirão). Major Antonio Luis Ribeiro accompanied one decedent (fl 40f), while Commander Antonio Joaquim Ferreira accompanied another (fl 42v). The baptismal records document the baptism of children born to enslaved mothers after the passage of the so-called "Free Womb" Law. Baptisms took place in the church as well as chapels, including the Chapel of Santo Antonio in the parish (freguesia) of São Lourenço, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição on Major João Lopes Bastos' lamb farm, and the Chapel of São João. A pastoral visitation realized by Francisco, bishop of Petrópolis, 20 May 1898 is recorded after the last baptismal entry.
