Scope & Content:

The volume records burial and baptismal records of free individuals registered in the Church of São Sebastião de Itaipu, Niterói-RJ. The burial records date from 28 Dec 1821 through 02 Mar 1852, while the baptismal records date from 12 May 1822 through 05 Mar 1854. The volume has no opening charter; the closing charter was signed by Manoel Roiz Gomes and dated 24 Jan 1822. Entries were signed by the following clergy: Vicar Antonio Brandão de Mello; Vicar Demetrio João Vieira Falcom; Brother Manoel de Sta. [Santa] Viridiana; Vicar João Baptista Lopes; and Vicar José Brithualdo de Mello. The volume also includes some testaments. Several of the registered record the names of grandparents and the recognition of paternity. On folios 125 and 126v, there are petitions for the registry of baptisms of freed individuals in the book of free people. Baptisms were recorded on folios 8 through 149v, while burials were recorded on folios 150 through 195.

Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 195 numbered folios and a cover. Some of the folios are stained and show signs of ink damage. Dimensions: 41.5cm X 32cm.
