Opens with a story ofNandapracticing meditation and having a vision of a terriblepreta(yi dwags) who tellsNandahe will soon be reborn in the realm of thepretas. Thepretaexplains thatNanda's only hope is to make offerings to all thepretas, all thebrāhmans andṛṣis, and the three jewels. Distressed,Nandaruns to the Buddha, who tells him about adhāraṇīthe Buddha received in a past life that protects against rebirth in the realm of thepretas by accomplishing precisely the kinds of offerings required byNanda. TheBhagavatthen teachesNandathedhāraṇīand how to perform the associated offerings.
