- 1, pp, 1-87. Journal and Orderly Book of Brigadier-General Joseph Smith, 15 Feb 1767-2 April 1769. Copy. Copied in XVIII. 11. This covers the first war with Haidar Ali. Apparently by General Smith's Aide-de-Camp, who refers to him throughout as "the Colonel." See [British Library] Add MS 29898 (Journals of Sir Henry Cosby). It contains plans of the battle of Changama (2 Sept. 1767), and the battle of Trinomaly (26 Sept. 1767), and is annotated throughout by Orme. Under 2 Sept. 1767 the writer of the Journal states that the Black Commandants were assembled before the battle of Changamah, "this being the first affair they had been in for some time, especially against Cavalry, he (the Colonel) hoped they would influence the sepoys to behave with steadiness and resolution." The subordinate position of the native officers is shown by the fact that not one of them is mentioned by name in this Journal. Under 1st and 2nd May 1768, mention is made of the surrender of Riacottah to the English, the Kiladar demanding and being allowed the honours of war; "the first demand of this kind, I believe, that ever was made by an Indian Commander and which we must attribute to that military spirit, which Hyder took every opportunity of instilling into his troops and enforced by rewards to the deserving and severe punishment upon those who behaved with infidelity or cowardice." It is evident from this and other similar statements that Haidar Ali and General Smith had much mutual respect for each other. The Journal concludes with a reasoned apology for General Smith's failure to achieve a decisive Success over Haidar.
