Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury (b. 1033/4, d. 1109) restores to the monks of Canterbury half of the revenue of the high altar of the cathedral, as granted by his predecessor Archbishop Lanfranc (b. c. 1010, d. 1089), grants the other half, and restores to the monks the manor of Stisted, Essex.
Witnessed by William, Archdeacon of Christ Church, Canterbury; Haimo, sheriff [of Kent]; Haimo, son of Vitalis; Robert, son of Watson; Wimund, man of the sheriff; Ralph, nephew of Bishop Gundulf; and many others.
Endorsed in a 12th-or 13th-century hand, 'De altari Christi et Sti.'; in a 14th- or 15th-century hand, 'Carta Anselmi archiepiscopi de medietate altaris et de manerio de Stistede'.
Affixed with a seal at the top left hand corner. The seal shows the Archbishop, standing on a rectangular platform, holding a pastoral staff in his right hand and a book in his left hand, with much of the legend damaged. The legend is: . . . LVMA . . .SE. . . GRATIA DE ARCH. . . . (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887), no. 1169).
