- Title:
- Conveyance of Reversion of Property (P.Lond. V 1729, TM 19744)
- Scope & Content:
-
The monk Ioannes bestows upon Patermouthis all his personal possessions (lines 40-42) as well as a hereditary house-share which has yet to be removed from the control of others (lines 32-33), presumably 'the sons of Kostantios' (lines 23-24). Isakios son of Kostantios was the husband of Tsone (P. Lond. V 1724.71) — the great-granddaughter of Patechnoumios (P. Lond. V 1724.23), the latter perhaps the father of this Ioannes — and thus a claimant to Ioannes' estate. In order to strengthen Patermouthis' claim against a possible challenge from the sons of Kostantios, Ioannes elaborates on the support he has received from Patermouthis during his illness, a frequent tactic in gifts made in contemplation of death. He swears that this support was freely (lines 25-26, 38-39) and generously (lines 16-22, 27-28, 39) given and was not part of any balance due for the sale of a house by Ioannes to Patermouthis' late father-in-law, Iakobos. The document had originally been addressed to someone else, perhaps to Tapia, but not to Patermouthis, as indicated by traces on lines 7, 9, and 16 and by the phraseology in the original version of line 25. The property may be the same as that referred to in P.Munch. 12.30 and 13.26.
