- Title:
- Intercepted letters of Mahomed Issoof Caun and Marchand
- Scope & Content:
- 1, pp. 1-22. Intercepted letters of Mahomed Issoof Caun and Marchand. Originals. Sent to Orme by Mr. John Call. All in French, those by Yusuf Khan signed "Mahomet Esouf Kan" and sealed with his Chop or Seal, which is dated 1754, the year in which he was given a Commission as Commander of all the Madras Sepoys in the English service. (1) pp. 7-8 (10 x 15 cm.). Letter, dated 25 Feb. 1764, from Yusuf Khan to M. Mallet. Acknowledges his letter of the 28th January, is convinced of his probity and great efforts to carry out the engagements which he has entered into with him in April 1763; thinks that he must have had much difficulty in getting away from Haidar Ali; suggests that he and M. Hugel should go by sea to Calicut, where M. Haussé will give them the necessary money to enable them to make a landing between Tuticorin and Manapar and so come to Tinnevelly; says that the English have resumed the siege, but are weaker than on the former occasion by 500 whites, hence he hopes on M. Hugel's arrival, which he expects towards the end of March, to force the English to raise the siege and even to abandon their heavy artillery; asks him to assure M. Hugel that he shall have everything he asks for himself, his officers, or his men, and that they will drive back the English to Trichinopoly, and perhaps even to Madras, and then join the French General, who is expected immediately to re-establish the French Factories in India; warns him not to compromise the Portuguese on the coast and to conceal his designs from the English. (2) pp. 9-10 (10 x 15 cm.). Letter, dated 23 Feb. 1764, from Yusuf Khan to M. Hugel. After informing him as in his letter to M. Mallet, adds that he has an army of observation between Tinnevelly and Madura of 4,000 Sepoys, 2,000 Colleries, 1,000 Moorish horse, 100 Topasses, 6 field pieces, with two officers and 30 gunners, of which he is to take command and then to act in conjunction with the force in Madura. (3) pp. 11-12 (10 x 15.5 cm.). Letter, dated 26 Feb. 1764, from Yusuf Khan to M. Haussé. Informs him of the desertion of M. Riquet with his company of Hussars, a loss of 25,000 rupees in horses alone; begs him to expedite the arrival of M. Hugel; comments on the treachery of M. Riquet and of M. Carrere, the surgeon-major. in whom he had placed the fullest confidence.(4) pp. 13-14 (20.3 x 15 cm.). Letter, dated 26 Feb. 1764, from M. Marchand to M. Haussé. Informs him of Riquet's desertion, says that he has long suspected him, and that he would have received the punishment which he merited long ago if Yusuf Khan had trusted him; Khan Sahib is now convinced of the wrong which he has done Marchand and has restored his confidence to him; warns him that the English at Tellicherry will know of the desertion of Riquet as soon as himself, and will seek to prevent M. Hugel from passing; moreover, as Surgeon-Major Carere knows and will inform the English of their plans, perhaps it will be better for M. Hugel to come by land; thinks it best that neither M. Hugel nor his officers should be informed of Riquet's desertion, for fear it may discourage their men, though, as a matter of fact, the hussars were practically useless in Madura; hints of a secret alliance with an unnamed native chief, which will deal a terrible and unexpected blow to the English. (5) pp, 15-16 (10 x 15 cm.). Letter, dated 20 March 1764, from Yusuf Khan to M. Hugel. Requests him to come by sea to Travancore and thence to Tinnevelly; promises his officers the same pay and field allowance which they received at Pondicherry; comments on the infamy of Riquet, who has handed over to the English prisons 44 innocent men who were as happy in Madura "as fish in the water." (6) pp. 17-18 (10 x 15 cm.). Letter dated 20 March 1764, from M. Marchand to M. d'Haumartin. Says that the besieged are getting on well, constantly damaging the besiegers, who also suffer from sickness. (7) pp. 19-20 (20 x 15 cm.). Letter, dated 20 March 1764, from M. Marchand to M. Haussé. Says that the arrival of M. Hugel, with Yusuf Khan's allies - the Travancoreans and the army of observation - will cause the English to be off "sans tambour ni trompette. Amen." (8) pp. 21-22 (10 x 15 cm.). Letter dated 20 March 1764, from Yusuf Khan to M. Mallet. Asks to expedite M. Hugel's detachment, says that the officers will receive the same pay as in the French service, and that he will pay the cavalry 32 Rupees, the grenadiers 24, the artillerymen 22-23½, the infantry 20 and 22. 2, pp. 25-26 (18.5 x 11.2 cm.). Letter dated 13 October 1764, 8 p.m., from M. Marchand to Major Charles Campbell. Original. Says that he has, with the consent of all his chiefs, arrested Yusuf Khan, and asks for a capitulation, pending the conclusion of which he requests that troops may be held ready to assist him in case of necessity.
