- Title:
- Hindostan History. Revolution at Delhi from 1748 to 1761. Army Orders
- Scope & Content:
-
- 1, pp. 2-3. Glossary and other notes on the Mughals.
- 2, pp. 3-105. A narrative of the Revolutions at Delhi from the year 1748 to 1761. Original. Copied in IV. 8. Dated Fort William, 28 January 1762. Supposed to be by Warren Hastings (see 45, p. 19), but the handwriting does not very closely resemble that in Hastings' letter to Sulivan (271. 1). There is much similarity between this paper and VI. 8.
- 3, pp. 109-143. An essay on the Art of War. In Orme's handwriting. Points out the dearth of good charts of countries and places in India and the general ignorance of the military value of such maps.
- 4, p. 144. Reflections on the opposition to the Stamp Act in America. In Orme's handwriting.
- 5, pp. 145-157. Notes, &c., on Moghul History and extracts from letters.
- 6, pp. 212-226 (reversed). The Passage of the Caroor River, 1760. In Orme's handwriting. Draft of a passage for his History, but much modified -- especially his censure of Muhammad Yusuf -- before being printed. On p. 215 is a rough sketch of Caroor.
- 7, pp. 228-236 (reversed). Note on the English possessions in Bengal. In Orme's handwriting.
- 8, pp. 238-246 (reversed). Instances of military misbehaviour in the hour of victory. In Orme's handwriting. Refers to the English at Patna in 1763, Prince Eugene's troops at the capture of Cremona, and Lally's attack on the Black Town of Madras in 1758. 9, pp. 272-276 (reversed). Orders to be observed by the Army. Apparently issued at Madras whilst Lawrence was in command.
