Portion of two contracts for lease from Hermopolis.
Upper papyrus (SB XVI 12865, P.Lond. III 1326(a) descr., TM 16310): Beginning of a lease between Aurelius Phoebammon son of Georgius, farmer of Hermopolis, and the comes Flavius Ioannes, son of the late Germanus, of Hermopolis. The details of the lease are lost. Dated 25 September 576.
Lower papyrus (SB XVI 12866, P.Lond. III 1326(b) descr., TM 16311): Beginning of a five-year lease of a vineyard, the lessee being Aurelius Papnuthius, son of Victor and Rachel, and the lessor Aurelius Phoebammon, son of Georgius. Dated 26 April 583.

Two papyrus sheets bearing writing on one side, with the back blank; mounted on cardboard in the same glass frame.
Upper papyrus (A): Upper portion of the sheet, with some surface damage; 11 lines written along the fibres, with trace of another line at the bottom; lines 9-11 lack the beginnings. Margins are minimal.
Lower papyrus (B): Upper portion of the sheet, with some surface damage; 14 lines written along the fibres; of line 14 only few letters at the beginning survive. Margins are minimal. Vertical folds are still visible. A sheet-join runs vertically along the right edge.

Script: A: Skilled cursive hand, upright and of medium size. B: Confident cursive hand, sloping to the right, somewhat compressed.

Provenance: Hermopolis (El-Ashmunein), Hermopolite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 1200-1520 from the Reverend Chauncey Murch (b. 1856, d. 1907) on 20 November 1903.
