- Scope & Content:
- Letter to Zenon from Nikon, agent in the Memphite nome of Apollonios, chief minister of finances (dioiketes), asking the recipient to reply about the unsold emmer wheat and barley, about which he had repeatedly written, and reporting on the current prices of these products. PSI V 493 preserves the rest of the letter with the docket, including date of receipt and summary. The original clay seal (TM Seal 970) is still preserved.

- Right-hand portion of a papyrus slip another portion of which is in Florence, published as PSI V 492; medium-brown, overall well preserved, with minor damage along the horizontal folds; bearing writing on one side, the back being blank. On the front, there are 6 lines written across the fibres, with lines 1-5 lacking the beginnings, which are preserved in the fragment in Florence; upper, lower and right margins are extant. The original clay seal is still preserved. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame with a small opening for the seal.

Script: Small, neat, upright hand, presumably Nikon’s. Same hand as Papyrus 2683.

Origin: Memphite nome (?), Egypt.
Provenance: Philadelpheia, meris of Herakleides, Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 2652-2721 from Dr. A. N. Kondilios in July 1925. Part of a joint purchase with the University of Michigan and Columbia University.
