These eight fragments most likely belonged to Cotton MS Otho B XI, part of the collection of Sir Robert Cotton (b. 1570/1, d. 1631), which was damaged in the Ashburnham House fire of 1731. The manuscript contains copies of the Old English version of Bede's Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (Ecclesiastical History of the English People), the G-text of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and the Old English Law Codes of Æthelstan II (r. 924-939), Alfred the Great (r. 871-899), and Ine of Wessex (r. 689-726).

Fragment 1: Language: Old English; Script: Insular minuscule; Date: possibly 11th century.
Fragments 2-8: Little to no visible text.

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet. Sir John Cotton bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
