These eight fragments formerly belonged to Cotton MS Otho D VIII, part of the collection of Sir Robert Cotton (b. 1570/1, d. 1631), which was damaged in the Ashburnham House fire of 1731. The composite manuscript is made up of six parts that were produced at separate times in England between the 2nd quarter of the 12th century and 4th quarter of the 14th century. The volume includes a Passionale (Passionary or Legendary), the Annales Sex Regum Anglie (Annals of Six Kings of England) of Nicholas Trevet (b. c. 1258, d. c. 1334), and a number of other chronicles of English history.
Contents:
Fragment 1: Language: Latin; Script: Gothic; Date: 4th quarter of the 14th century. This fragment formerly belonged to f. 222 of Cotton MS Otho D VIII. It contains the text of Nicholas Trevet's Annales Sex Regum Anglie.
Fragment 2: Language: Latin; Script: Gothic: Date: 4th quarter of the 14th century. This fragment formerly belonged to f. 229 of Cotton MS Otho D VIII. It contains the text of Nicholas Trevet's Annales Sex Regum Anglie.
Fragments 3, 5 and 7: Language: Latin; Script: Gothic cursive; Date: 4th quarter of the 14th century-1st quarter of the 15th century. These fragments formerly belonged to ff. 234-254 of Cotton MS Otho D VIII. It contains the text of a Chronicle of English History for the years 1341-1399.
Fragment 4: Language: Latin; Script: Gothic cursive; Date: 2nd half of the 14th century. This fragment formerly belonged to ff. 256-262 of Cotton MS Otho D VIII. It contains the text of an account of a dispute between Henry III and his barons.
Fragments 6 and 8: Latin; Script: Gothic. Date: 4th quarter of the 14th century-1st quarter of the 15th century.

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet. Sir John Cotton bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
