- Title:
- Receipt for a Probation Letter (P.Lond. III 993 descr., P.Gascou 21, TM 22763)
- Scope & Content:
- The document is a receipt in epistolary form written in Greek. The bookkeeper (actuarius) of a Roman military unit, probably that of the Mauri Scutarii in Hermopolis, acknowledges that he has received the recruit’s letter of probation (epistula probatoria). The man is thus officially a member of the unit itself. At the bottom of the document, the scribe has placed a Latin greeting formula: 'fare well’ (bene valeas).
