5th Petition (Tchelobitnaja) of Solovetsky monks to tsar Alexey Mikhailovich
Piataja solovetskjia tchelobitnaja tsariu Alekseju Mikhailovichu
- Scope & Content:
-
Monks of Solovetsky monastery, one of the main Russian cloisters, refused to service using new revised church books, which were sent them from Moscow after the church reform of Patriarch Nikon. Monks wrote several petitions (tchelobitnaia) to tsar Alexey Mikhailovich explaining their refusion. The most known is the 5th petition of Solovetsky monks. It was written by treasurer of Solovetsky monastery Geronty and was sent to Moscow in 1667 before the monastery was besieged by forces of tsar. The petition includes detailed analysis of innovations in the liturgical service and in the text of church books and proved views of Old believers. The 5th petition of Solovetsky monks is one of the most spread early Old believers’ writings. This manuscript of 1670-1680th contains a short (initial) version of the petition's text. The manuscript has a binding as a bag, it let the owners to bring the manuscript with themselves everywhere. In the middle of the 18th century the manuscript was purchased by Ivan Ivan’s son Popov for Afanasij Ivan’s son Sarajev who was a resident of Pudozh churchyard of Sum’s volost (see the note on 28 Apr 1747). Village Usachjovo of Kargopol region is mentioned.
