- Scope & Content:
-
The Tale of the Rout of Mamai is a detailed description of the Battle of Kulikovo in 1381 between the Mongol army of Golden Horde with a commander Mamai and the army of Grand Prince Dmitrij Ivanovich Donskoj. The Tale says that it was written by the words of a spectator and a participant, but in fact it is dated by the 16th century. This Tale was well known and preserved in numerous copies. This one is dated by the 18th century, near 1785 as it was written on the paper with watermark of this year.
Extent: 1 volume containing 38 folios and 3 fragments.
Size and dimensions of original material: Height 21 cm, width 17,5 cm, depth 1,3 cm.
Condition of original material: The manuscript was restored in 1973. It has new binding made of cardboard and leather-cloth. Probably the manuscript had not any binding earlier because the first leaf is very dirty and has not any text so we may suppose that it was a cover for the manuscript.
Custodial history: The manuscript was collected during the archeographical expedition to the Kargopol region in 1965.
