- Will of Acusilaus (P.Oxy. III 494, Chrest.Mitt. 305, TM 20630)
- Scope & Content:
- Copy of the will of Acusilaus, son of Dius and Dionysia, of Oxyrhynchus, making provisions for his son, wife and slaves. Acusilaus grants freedom to his five slaves for their good will and affection; his son Dius is made the heir of his property, subject to a life-interest for his wife Aristous alias Apollonarion, daughter of Heraclides and Herais. His wife is to provide their son with a monthly allowance in kind and money for his sustenance; she has the right to sell and mortgage the property, and benefit from the transactions; she is to pay all debts that may outstand. In addition, slaves and freedmen should receive a sum of money every year for celebrating the testator’s birthday by his tomb. With subscriptions of four witnesses, who recognize their seals.

- Papyrus sheet, complete and well preserved, only lacking the lower left corner. The writing runs on one side along the fibres, and the back is blank. On the front, there are forty-four lines; margins are extant, the lower being ample. No blank space was left to the right. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame.

Materials: Papyrus.
Dimensions: 390 x 232 mm; housed in a glass frame measuring 450 x 280 mm.
Script: Small, neat and regular hand of a professional scribe, ligatured in places; letterforms tend to slightly slant to the right; sigma of square shape. Five additional hands for the subscriptions at the end.
