Petitions (UPZ I 2, TM 3393; UPZ I 52, TM 3443)
- Scope & Content:
-
Recto (UPZ I 2, TM 3393): Petition to the strategus of Memphis, Dionysius, by Harmais, a recluse in the Serapeum, against Nephoris. Nephoris’s daughter Tathemis, who had been living in the temple with Harmais, had deposited a considerable sum of money with Harmais for safekeeping. Nephoris claimed the sum on the grounds that her daughter needed them for her circumcision, clothing and dowry. Had the terms not been met, Nephoris would have had to pay the money back with addition; not only did this not happen, but Tathemis is now claiming back her money. Dated between April and October 163 BC.
Verso (UPZ I 52, TM 3443): Copy of a petition from Ptolemaeus, recluse in the Serapeum, to the hypodioiketes of Memphis, Sarapion, concerning the bread allowance still due to the twins of the Serapeum, Taous and Tages. The twins are in distressed condition, as they are hungry. Dated shortly after 10 January 161 BC. Papyrus 35 contains the same petition.
