Title:

Account for the Issue of Wine from the Apion Archive (P.Oxy. XXVII 2480, TM 17013)

Scope & Content:

Portions of a papyrus roll from the archive of the Apion family containing an account for the issue of two kinds of wine ('wine' and 'sour wine') to workers on the estate and personnel, private soldiers (bucellarii), religious communities. The issues were made for services rendered, as salaries, as gifts for special occasions and events, and as donations. In some entries, the wine was destined for the drink of the cavalry horses taking part in the spectacles of the circus. Some fragments are unpublished.

Fve sheets of a papyrus roll and several additional fragments of varying size and state of preservation, housed in twelve glass frames named Papyrus 3063(1), 3063(2), 3063(3), 3063(4), 3063(5), 3063(6), 3063(7), 3063(8), 3063(9), 3063(10), 3063(11), and 3063(12). Mostly written on one side only along the fibres, with occasional writing on the back.
