Manumission and Tax-Receipt (P.Turner 19, TM 15689)
- Scope & Content:
-
Deed executed through eight notaries of Oxyrhynchus for the manumission of a slave-girl belonging to the priestess Sinthoonis, daughter of Thoonis and Tausorapis, acting with her brother as a guardian. The ransom money is one thousand silver drachmas, paid by Ammonius, a freedman. No claim on the assets of the manumitted slave can be made after her death. There follows the tax-receipt for the payment of the tax on property transfer (enkyklion), made by the emancipated slave on the same day as the deed. The receipt may have been written prior to the deed, which would explain why such a wide space was left blank between the texts. Another fragment of the same papyrus is now in Amsterdam, in the private collection Boswinkel.
