Fragment of a Contract (Under publication) and Census declaration (SB XXII 15464, TM 43195)

Scope & Content:

Upper papyrus (A): Beginning of a contract drawn up in Nilopolis in the Arsinoite nome, dated to the reign of the emperor Nero (54-68). Under publication.

Lower papyrus (B): Extract from a census register, listing members of a household. The declaration was probably filed in 119 and the copy was made later in that year.

Two papyrus sheets that do not belong together, mounted on cardboard in the same glass frame.

Upper papyrus (A): Upper right corner of a medium-brown papyrus sheet, damaged by holes regularly distributed on the right-hand half; written on one side along the fibres. The front bears the ends of 6 lines; the upper margin is extant, the right margin is minimal. The back is blank.

Lower papyrus (B): Medium-brown papyrus sheet with detached scrap, broken off at the top and left, damaged along the other edges as well; written on one side along the fibres. The front bears the ends of 11 lines. Part of the lower margin is extant. The back is blank.

Provenance: Arsinoite nome, Egypt. The two papyri were purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 1545-1753 from the Reverend Chauncey Murch (b. 1856, d. 1907) on 8 December 1906.
