- Scope & Content:
- Pen and ink drawing of Surtof on the Kahun road by Dr. Rupert Kirk, dated 15th May 1840. This is one of 95 drawings (90 folios), chiefly of landscapes and monuments in the Deccan, West India and Afghanistan made between 1821 and 1844 by George Boyd. Three of the drawings in the album are by Kirk who was Assistant Surgeon and later Surgeon in 1830-52 and served in Afghanistan 1839-40 with the 1st Grenadier Regiment, Bombay Native Infantry. This drawing is for plate 2 of R. Kirk,' Views of defiles and mountain passes in Affghanistan' (London, 1841)During the First Afghan War (1839-1842) the outpost of Kahun, Baluchistan, was defended from May 16th to September 28th 1840 by a battalion of 140 men in extremely hot, inhospitable conditions against an overwhelming force of hostile tribesmen until they were forced to capitulate.
