- Scope & Content:
- This is the title page of an album of 19 drawings (22 folios) of scenes in Mumbai (Bombay) and the south of India together with a few miscellaneous sketches taken between 1817 and c.1822 by Thomas Cussans (1796-1870). Inscribed on the title page of the album is: 'Thos Cussans, July 30th, 1817'; and on the cover of the album: 'Thos Cussans Lt. Madras Artillery. Janry 1817'. Cussans served in the Madras artillery in 1814, then the Horse Brigade from 1817 to 1829. He was a Lieutenant Fireworker in 1814, Lieutenant in 1818 and Captain in 1829. As from 23 January 1823 he was struck off for taking extended furlough without leave and was married 20 December 1828 at St Peter Port, Guernsey. In later Census papers he was described as an artist.
