Letters from Charles George Gordon regarding the situation in Sudan following the defeat of William Hicks’ expedition.
This file consists of:
-a letter to Sir Samuel White Baker (Explorer and Major-General of the Ottoman Empire), dated 4 January 1884, discussing the need for an intervention in Sudan, encouraging Baker to raise an army against the Mahdi, and suggesting the issue of a proclamation to the people of Sudan
-a letter to Sir Samuel Baker, dated 8 January 1884, very briefly summarising Gordon’s meeting with journalist W.T. Stead, editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, (a meeting which would result in the publication of the article Chinese Gordon on the Soudan) and arranging a time to meet with Sir Samuel
-a translation of a note transmitting news of troop movements in Sudan, probably sent by Gordon to his allies; the note includes an annotation on how it was hidden on the messenger's person and an envelope
