Manuscript copy by an unknown scribe, previously in two volumes and now bound as one; the first volume continues mid-sentence into the second.
The spine bears the title ‘Capt[ain] Sadlier’s Travels in Arabia. 1820. Vol[ume]s I & II.’
An account of Captain George Forster Sadlier’s journey from the Persian Gulf to the interior of the Arabian Peninsula and on to the Red Sea. Sadlier, a British Army officer, was appointed by the Bombay Government in 1819 to undertake a political mission into the interior of the Arabian Peninsula to meet with Ibrahim Pasha, a general in the Egyptian army, to proffer an alliance against the Qawasim operating in the Persian Gulf and with whom the British had come into dispute.
The title page bears the following references:
‘Exam[ination] Office 1822’
‘Bombay Political letter 234 of 7 Mar[ch] 1821’
‘Bombay Political No 806’
‘P.C. 80’

‘19086’ on Volume 1; ‘19807’ on Volume 2
There follows a contents page and copies (some precised) of preliminary expedition correspondence between Sadlier and officials of the Government of Bombay. This is followed by general remarks on the route, including technicalities and navigational and mapping logistics.
The diary proper commences on 14 April 1819 and describes Sadlier’s journey across the Arabian Peninsula from El Katif [Al Qatif] on the Persian Gulf coast across the Dehenah [Ad Dahna] Desert to Shakrah [Shaqra] and Anizeh [Unayzah]; and then across the Nedjd [Najd] to a point west of Medina [Al Madinah] where he met with Ibrahim Pasha on 8 September. Sadlier then continued to Yamboo [Yanbu] on the Red Sea coast, arriving on 20 September. Diary entries include geographical and navigational descriptions, accounts of meetings and personal thoughts.
The diary then proceeds as continuous narrative rather than daily entries, and relates Sadlier’s boat journey to Jeddah and further meetings with Ibrahim Pasha. From here Sadlier sailed via Mocha to Bombay, arriving on 8 May 1820.
The journal concludes with two appendices containing further correspondence between Sadlier and officials of the Government of Bombay.
