From manuscript title page: "written by Swartz. Copied from the ms in possession of Rev. G.H. Apthorp and recd by him from Rev. Brotherton, Tanjore, March 1. 1841." Collection of sermons by famous German Lutheran missionary C.F. Schwartz of the Halle-Tranquebar mission in South India, likely collected in the 1780s and 90s. Topics range from a narrative description of the Pentateuch to instructions for catechists in India. R.E. Frykenberg calls Schwartz the most important nineteenth-century missionary in India for his mission work (1750-1799). Schwartz was also the teacher of Vedanayagam Sastriar, an important Tamil Protestant poet and hymn-writer at the court of Serfoji II in Thanjavur.
