- Scope & Content:

Includes two items bound together with string: (1) blue and brown paper manuscript notebook fragment including a draft and final copy of the Annual Report of the American Ceylon Mission for 1871 (signed by Rev. William E. DeReimer and Samuel F. Green), and one version of the Report for 1872. Include extracts of reports from the following stations: Navaly, Manepy, Batticotta, Sankany, Araly, Moolai, Poongerdoo Island, Pandeteripo, and Valany. Each report consists of direct quotes from missionaries, native assistants, pastors, and catechists working at the station. Extensive information on education (Theological and Training College, village schools, the medical department, and the Oodooville and Udupitty female boarding schools). In line with all annual reports, church statistics, members of the mission, deaths, excommunications, colportage, etc. are all disclosed. Special considerations of the 1872 reports (signed by W.W. Howland) include the newly opened Jaffna College and emphasis on the unofficial work of women within the mission. (2) 'Annual Report of the American Ceylon Mission 1873'. A print report noting the death of Rev. Levi Spaulding and Mrs. J.C. Smith and giving regular details on publications, education, and anecdotes on conversion. Mentions of Brahmins and the effects of converting the so-called higher castes link to a wider mission debate around conversion methods. These reports acknowledge and represent an evolution in the mission from being primarily carried out by foreigners towards self-dependence and reliance, particularly in the areas of native pastors, schools, and donations. As a result, the reports name and emphasize the work of Ceylonese mission workers more than reports from previous years.
