- Alexander Johnston Paper

-
Printed document entitled "Legend of the Heart of the Great Marquis of Montrose" written by Alexander Johnston to his daughters. James Graham, the Marquis of Montrose, a maternal ancestror of A.J., was a Scottish Royalist. After his imprisonment and death in 1650, the Marquis' family embalmed his heart, encased it in silver and gold, and kept it as a relic. The relic was taken to India by A.J.'s mother Hester Maria Johnston, where it was displayed at the family's home in India, Fort Defiance (or Tamukkam, anglicized as Tamkam), until it was stolen, presumably by someone working in the house who believed the relic held great power. Later, A.J. would enter into legal battles with the East India Company, claiming that the palace in Madurai in which the heart was stolen belonged personally to his family, rather than to his father's office. The file also includes very damaged types notes on the Carnsalloch property and handwritten genealogical notes.
