Title:

Ikhlāṣ al-naṣāʾiḥ fī takhṭīṭ al-ṣafāʾiḥ اخلاص النصائح في تخطيط الصفائح

Scope & Content:

Treatise in ten fuṣūl (فصل) grouped into three bābs (أبواب) discussing the geometrical and mathematical skills needed to inscribe lines onto horizontal (رخائم) and vertical (منحرفات) sundials.

It was written by Abū Jaʿfar ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad ibn Zakarīyā al-Qurayshī al-Makhrūmī al-Tūnisī al-Tūzarī (أبو جعفر عمر بن عبد الرحمن بن أبي القاسم بن محمد بن زكريا القريشي المخرومي التونسي التوزري, fl. ca 1450).

According to the author's introduction, the text (the title of which is found at f. 121v, line 10) was written in response to the request of an Andalūsī scholar that he clarify a topic mentioned in his treatise on the use of the sine quadrant (رسالة محصلة المطلوب في العمل بربع الجيوب) which had been written the previous year (Shawwāl 850/December 1446- January 1447, see f. 101v, lines 11-16).

The present copy was completed on 9 Muḥarram 903/7 September 1497 by the scribe Sulaymān ibn Aḥmad ibn Saʿīd al-Murādī, known as al-Barrī (سليمان بن أحمد بن سعيد المرادي شهر البري, see colophon, f. 122r, lines 6-10, transcribed below). The scribe states that it was transcribed from the author's holograph, itself completed on 21 Shaʿbān 851/I November 1447 (or 22 Shaʿbān as calculated by 'the most learned one' [ العلامة]). Various calendars are cited, giving the equivalents of the holograph copy's date as 1 November (of the Christian Julian calendar), or Tishrīn II of the intercalated (leap) year 1759 of the Seleucid era, and 5 Hathor (Hatūr) 1163 in the Coptic calendar (Diocletian era).
