- Title:
- Papers relating to A K Chesterton’s newspaper articles on William Joyce
- Scope & Content:
- Contains correspondence relating to drafts of the articles and Chesterton seeking Margaret Joyce’s approval of them, the terms of publication, Lord Beaverbrook’s views on the articles and whether William Joyce warranted such coverage (they were to be published in the Daily Express, a Beaverbrook title), drafts of the third, fourth, and fifth articles, a short biography of Joyce and a photocopy of the rules of the National Socialist League. The articles were intended, in part, as a rebuttal of recent articles by Rebecca West, who had written about William Joyce in her book, The Meaning of Treason, in 1949.
