Scope & Content:

The map sheet was originally contained in IOR/F/4/2536/147465 but was removed for conservation purposes.

Manuscript tracing showing the route taken by the Reverend David Livingstone from Mossel Bay [in modern day South Africa] up to Sisheke [Sesheke, Zambia] during his travels in 1850-51. The areas around his route are depicted, as far east as Ouillimane [Quelimane, Mozambique] and as far north as the northern headwaters of the Zambezi basin in northern Angola and Zambia. The headwaters of the Langebongo [Lungwebungu] basin are shown in the north-west corner. The map portrays: hydrology, including details of seasonal changes; settlements and place names; relief (basic indications); and tribal regions, with some descriptions of tribes and their leaders, physical attributes, agricultural practices, interrelations and locations.

There are also occasional details of events which occurred during Livingstone’s travels.

Original map produced by Thomas Budden, Surveyor, between 1851-53. Scale produced by Gungather Luxumunjee. This copy bears the printing statement: ‘Copied in the Chief Eng[ineer]’s office Bombay 20th Octo[be]r 1853’.
